[Report] HAPIfork: The Smart Fork That Vibrates When You Eat Too Fast
With obesity on the rise and the widespread proliferation of mobile apps growing, “smart” fitness and health tracking devices have grown at a tremendous clip, extending to everything from watches, to pocket clips, to WiFi body composition scales.
In what might be the most ridiculous and unconventional application of health monitoring devices to-date, HAPILABS recently unveiled the HAPIfork — a bluetooth-enabled “smartfork” that vibrates when you eat too fast. It’s like your dog’s shock collar, except for your obese cousin.
HAPIfork aims to tackle obesity and health issues by slowing down the rate of food consumption, which helps prevent digestive problems, increases satiety, and reduces the chance of overeating. According to HAPILABS, the HAPIfork tracks and reacts to the following behaviors:
Every time you bring food from your plate to your mouth with your fork, this action is called: a “fork serving“. The HAPIfork measures:
- How long it took to eat your meal.
- The amount of “fork servings” taken per minute.
- Intervals between “fork servings”.
It also alerts you with the help of indicator lights when you are eating too fast.1
Assuming your HAPIfork is charged and ready-to-go (a $99, chargeable fork that you plug into your PC’s USB port — chew on that), it’ll automatically track the above metrics and transmit the data after each meal — either to smart phone via Bluetooth or PC via USB connection — which can be viewed in chart form from their online/mobile portal.
It remains to be seen if “fork servings” is 1. a real metric and 2. meaningful in any way, shape, or form, but if it resonates and helps accelerate weight loss I’m all for it.
HAPIfork is available in 5 colors and in a spoon version (HAPIspoon?), and will retail for $99.99 in the first quarter of 2013.
